Chemical peels, or facial peels, have been a go-to treatment for years. The purpose of a professional-grade peel is to gently but powerfully exfoliate the skin. We want to do this because, regardless of our home care habits, dead skin cells have a way of sticking around, muddling the surface that should be radiant and smooth. If you are in need of a refresher, the question you need to be answered is “which chemical peel is right for me?” The team at Westport Dermatology and Laser Center is here to help.

Light Peels

Light chemical peels act on the superficial layers of cells. For this reason, this treatment may also be called a superficial peel. The gentlest of all peel treatments, this method of exfoliation may affect positive change with a mild acid such as a beta hydroxy acid or alpha hydroxy acid. Sometimes, acidly comes from fruit or plant sources. In any case, the light peel is beneficial without requiring an ounce of down time. Rather than producing full-blown peeling, a light peel is more likely to invite minor flaking of surface cells. The gentleness of this treatment makes it ideal for routine use.

Medium Peels

A medium peel will affect tissue slightly deeper than a light peel. This means there will be more noticeable flaking. Patients may also experience temporary redness after a medium peel, which typically involves an application of TCA or Trichloroacetic acid. After a medium peel, the skin appears smoother and brighter thanks to the removal of dead and damaged cells.

Deep Peels

Deep peels are efficient anti-agers. They remove discolorations and can even lighten freckles and other marks on the skin. Because a deep peel elicits a stronger peeling response (about a week or two), this treatment can accomplish goals such as smoothing deeper lines and creases and encourage collagen formation.

We proudly offer a variety of chemical peels and other skin-refreshing treatments to patients in the Westport and Darien areas. Depending on your goals and needs, multiple treatments may be best. To schedule your visit with us, call 203-226-3600.
