We’ve heard more about LED lighting in recent years, but few people realize that this type of light source can be used therapeutically. We may know it as an energy-saver for the home, but not as a skin and mood booster. Here at Westport Dermatology & Laser Center, LED light treatments are quite popular. We are proud to offer these treatments as a form of tissue rejuvenation and correction that work without side effects or downtime.
What is an LED facial?
LED is the acronym for light-emitting diode. There are several different spectrums of LED light, and each can target the skin for a particular response. LED facials are relaxing and regenerative. Patients sit back comfortably while wearing a special facemask that delivers specific wavelengths of infrared light. The wavelength of light that is delivered is selected based on the particular response we want to achieve. For example:
- Red light increases circulation through the skin, which is good for tissue repair.
- Blue light destroys the bacteria that can cause acne.
- Amber light stimulates collagen and elastin production.
- White light reaches deeper layers of the skin, where it soothes inflammation and stimulates collagen tightening.
Benefits of LED Light Therapy
LED light therapy treatments aren’t just relaxing. Depending on the wavelength of light that is selected for you after a thorough consultation, benefits of treatment can include:
- More radiant skin
- Less noticeable fine lines and wrinkles
- Reduced inflammation
- Improved acne scars
- Fewer breakouts by destroying acne-causing bacteria
- Better circulation for healthier skin
- Increased collagen production
- Improved mood during shorter, darker days
What to Expect from LED Light Therapy Treatments
LED light therapy treatments are beneficial in multiple ways. The infrared light involved in these treatments is significantly different, gentler, than laser devices and intense pulsed light treatments. It is even more conservative than chemical peels and microdermabrasion in that LED therapy is not ablative. LED light does not carry ultraviolet rays so does not cause damage to the skin. It is suitable for all skin tones and types. Though noninvasive and nonablative, LED light therapy IS effective. Our patients can begin to see positive changes in their skin’s appearance and resilience after their first session, with follow-up sessions scheduled every few weeks to rejuvenate the skin from the inside out. Once the desired improvements have been achieved, touch-up treatments may be scheduled a few times a year.
