No one wants to give away their age if they don’t have to! “Active aging” is definitely a buzz-word of this decade as more of us are spending time outside, in the sun, all year long…skiing, hiking, gardening, playing golf or tennis. Age Spots, sometimes called Sun Spots or Liver Spots, typically appear on skin that has had the most exposure over the years to Ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. They are found on the backs of the hands, the face, shoulders and neck. The use of tanning beds or lamps can also contribute to their development. They are small and flat but they can group together making them appear even larger. Age spots commonly develop in people with fair complexions but they are also seen in people with darker complexions. And although they are usually harmless, they can be a sign of aging – especially on the face and hands.
At Westport, we offer a non-invasive treatment solution, a breakthrough technology called IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or PhotoRejuvenation.
Here’s how it works: The treatment area is prepared with a cool gel. Then a hand-piece is used to gently pulse an intense light over the area. The light penetrates the skin, destroying the melanin-producing cells. The generated heat impairs the vessels or lesions without damaging the surface of the skin. After treatment, the skin is cleaned and sun block applied. Healing begins, but the lesions may darken before they flake off or are absorbed by the body.
Each treatment takes about 20 minutes and can be repeated as often as every 3 to 4 weeks. Discomfort is minimal and there is little or no downtime. You can resume normal activities immediately. Following treatment, your skin will appear smoother and tighter, with a more even texture.
Additional Benefits: IPL can also be used to reduce the appearance of broken capillaries, mild acne scars, rosacea, dark circles under the eyes, and fine lines around the mouth and eyes.
